Well, I guess you're spot on! Checked the version and it looks like it's an original RPi Model B+, so not a Model 2 B. My apologies for the oversight. Will try a Model 2 in the next 24 hrs and report back.
So I did a bit more troubleshooting and concluded the following.
First, the green flashes on the RPi are 7, which means that kernel.img was not found. On the SD Card, I see kernel7.img but not kernel.img. I copied that file and renamed to kernel.img.
